About Terracotta
Terracotta, (Italian: "baked earth", from the Latin terra cocta) is a clay-based unglazed ceramic. The term is also used to refer to items made out of this material and to its natural, brownish orange color, which varies considerably*.
The art of making fancy & attractive jewelry from Terracotta is probably as old as human civilization. Clay being abundantly available, versatile, organic and lending itself to any shape and being extremely responsive to even a slight touch, became the natural choice of artisans to produce beautiful jewelry. The quality of clay used and the temperature under which the articles are fired decides the quality of final product. Suitable clay is collected from ponds/lakes or river beds and stored in shade. Before use, the clay has to be pulverized and sieved to get fine powder. The powdered clay is mixed with water and kneaded thoroughly to get dough. The clay is then transformed in to exquisite jewelry the beauty of which depends on deft hands of an artist. The designs are etched on the surface using metal wires or special small tools made for this purpose. The final product is then fired in a kiln. After firing the clay, a red-oxide coating is sometimes given to get the dark brownish-red color which adds to the beauty of the art work.
Clay jewelry is a perfect example of eco-friendly, organic and handmade pieces of art.
