Ramlal Khatri is a very talented artisan who has won prestigious national awards for his wood-block printing, a traditional art where hand-carved wood blocks are used to create patterns on fabric. He follows an environmentally-friendly process and uses 100% natural dyes. Wood-blocking has been practiced for generations, originally used to create bed sheets, for which they were given merit as artists. However, these were not very marketable products, and this artisan group began to struggle.

 

Our vendor (Handmade Expressions) developed the idea of making functional products using this age-old technique as a way to preserve this traditional art. These bags are reusable, washable bags, made from locally-grown and woven, unbleached cotton. These are then hand-blocked using natural mineral and vegetable dyes.
