About Charan

" I can't seem to remember the very first time I thought about clay as a medium to work with, but I have faint memories of watching potters in India throwing on a large wheel, spinning it with a stick. While in India, I always searched for the medium on which I could express my creativity. With access to clay and kilns being very hard I remember working with something like play dough to satisfy the artist within and that was in the 80s. At some point I knew I wanted to work with heat as well and started baking as a hobby and later a part time profession while doing my engineering. At the back of my mind I always knew I wanted to work with clay so I kept exploring it in my spare time.

It was in Fall 98 that I came to the United States, which left me with just enough time to work with polymer clay. After moving to Washington State in 2000, I was adamant on getting on the wheel and trying my hand at throwing. I took my first class in wheel-thrown pottery and was completely fascinated. I remember my instructor, Sheri Cunningham, asking me for how long have I been throwing and I answered, "All my life, but in my head". That feels a long time ago. Since then I have taken several workshops from well known artists in the United States. This has added a lot to my skills in wheel-throwing, hand-building, extruding, making tiles, glazing and the list goes on.

I prefer to make forms with fluidity and movement striving to give life to clay and making it a lasting part of someone's life. Being brought up in India for a significant part of my life, my work has shades of Indian culture and art. I consciously make an effort to incorporate uniqueness and functionality in all my artwork. Pottery has given me the much needed respite from the monotony of everyday life. Centering a mass of clay and giving it form feels as satisfying as organizing and bringing peace to all the chaos that there is around me.

My goal is to continue working with this medium to create art work which is cherished for life."
