About the Artists

A group of brave and talented women artisans in the Himalayan mountainous region of India create beautiful, sustainable jewelry line. These women are victims of child marriage, and are now living in the Short Stay Home ran by the cooperative, earning a living by making jewelry and other ornaments. At the same time, they are learning how to weave, cut, tailor, and other various artisan skills. All of their work reflects their perseverance, talent and ethnic art of the region.
Some of the jewelry is made by drying tree resins, particularly pine, while some is created by sourcing local stones, gems and metals. For the resin jewelry, the artisans polish the resins to create beads of different shapes and sizes. Different finishes provide either a clean, smooth, shiny texture, or a more natural, rough texture. The tree resins are a renewable source and an excellent alternative to wood.
The cooperative helps women become independent after being victims of child marriage. Some of the artisans even have a full-time job outside of their shelter and are able to make the jewelry in their spare time. By supporting our artisans through fair trade, you are helping this group of women become independent, self-sufficient and live a life they deserve. |
